International Journal of Sports Science and Engineering Vol. 04 (2010) No. 04, pp. 195-208

Author/Writer: Kouji Tahata, Akihito Tomita and Sadao Tomizawa
Introduction

For square contingency tables with nominal categories, Tahata, Miyamoto and Tomizawa (2004) considered power-divergence type measure to represent the degree of departure from the quasi-symmetry (QS) model which is essentially equivalent to the Bradley-Terry (BT) model. This paper proposes other measures to represent the degree of departure from the QS (BT) model. The proposed measures are defined by using the Matusita distance (1954, 1955), which is the true distance measure. The proposed measures would be useful for comparing the degree of departure from the QS (BT) model in several tables. As example, the measure is applied to the win-loss standings of professional baseball league in Japan.
