The novel begins in the Brighton hotel room the doctor. His son, Octave, is an average student of the Central School . He befriended Marcel Bruckmann, a brilliant student who serves as a mentor for Octave. On hearing the news of the inheritance, Octavian is filled with joy, while Marcel is more reserved on this news. Meanwhile, Dr. Buckwheat, always in Brighton, decided to use the money to build a model city based on scientific principles, Franceville. The news of this legacy is spreading in Europe and to Professor Schultz, anti-French German professor, who also claims to inheritance. En route to England, an agreement was reached: the inheritance is divided between the two men.
