This book builds on the activities of the British Academy of Management Performance Management Special Interest Group, and the ESRC Seminar Series ‘Perspectives on performance’ that has provided a structure and impetus for the book. The seminar series was designed to explore the way performance management is researched and practised from the perspective of a range of fields of study and disciplinary domains. Between 2004 and 2006, seminars were held at the Open University Business School, Warwick Business School, Cranfield School of Management, Leeds University Business School, Henley Management College and the University of East Anglia. For their support in helping both plan and mount these seminars and for their continued enthusiasm for the project, we would like especially to thank Mike Kennerley, Zoe Radnor, Liz Houldsworth, Jean Clarke, David Barnes, Vinh Chau and Barry Witcher. All the seminars were ably supported administratively by Rebecca Davies and would not have happened at all without funding from the Economic and Social Research Council.
