This section is an introduction to the use of membranes in processing. It is intended to be brief and is thus not comprehensive. It is hoped that it will allow the reader with little prior knowledge of the technology. The basic background necessary to read the remaining sections in the book. In fact the remaining sections add much of the basic theory and cover a wide range of examples of application of the technology.
Read together, the various sections cover most of the principal commercial applications. General coverage of the technology can also be found in the recent book by Rautenbach and Albrecht.
