Carnivorous plants use five basic types: pitfall traps, flypaper traps, shap traps, bladder traps and lobster-pot traps. These traps may be active or passive, depending upon whether movement aids the capture of prey. It has been studied that all trap types are modifications of a similar basic structure-the hairy leaf. Based on the radial symmetry of their flowers and their insect traps, these plants are placed in Droseraceae and Nepenthaceae in the order Nepenthales, but according to modern classification though the families are same but these are distributed in several diparate orders.
The present book makes an elaborate experimental study on various mechanisms of carnivorous plants: structure, movement of tentacles, aggregation of protoplasm, effects of heat, nitrogenous and non-nitrogenous fluids, salts, acids, alkaloids and other poisons, and vapours, sensitiveness and transmission of motor impulse. Basing the presentation on the common sun-dew, the book also describes various species such as Dionaea Muscipula, Aldrovanda Vesiculosa, etc. The book also makes an interesting presentation on various species of Drosophyllum, Pinguicula and Utricularia.
