This book provides object lessons in a methodology of grid-based design for creating compelling user interfaces for the Web. It will guide you through a foundational theory of how and why grids work, then take you through a series of exercises that will put those ideas into practice.
If you practice, manage, or are simply interested in Web design, this book is intended for you. You’ll get the most out of it if you have a fundamental familiarity with the basic concepts of graphic design and typography and, as mentioned above, if you continue to pursue a wider design education beyond these pages.
If you’re new to Web design, you’ll need a reasonable level of comfort with the mechanics of website construction to really benefit from the chapters that follow. The concepts I present, and especially the practical exercises that make up the core of this book, all assume a working knowledge of how HTML and CSS combine to construct a Web page, and how JavaScript and other technologies can enhance the behavior of a Web interface. You won’t need to be an expert in these skills, but you will need to understand how they work.
